The Occupational English Test (OET) is the specific English test for 12 categories of healthcare professionals who intend to practise in an English-speaking nation. It evaluates the English language proficiency of overseas-trained healthcare professionals across 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Though it may appear similar to the evaluations in IELTS and TOEFL, the tasks and materials are tailored to medical contexts, such as writing referral letters or engaging in role-play scenarios with patients. Achieving a qualifying score in OET is often a requirement for immigration and professional licensing, in countries such as the USA, the UK, and others. The OET is offered in 3 formats as below:
Paper-based OET is an ideal choice for the applicants who prefer handwriting, taking tests in person, and direct face-to-face interaction with the examiner. Applicants are required to attend their designated test centres.
Computer-based OET is well-suited to applicants who are comfortable with digital typing, and completing the speaking section via video calls. This format is also preferred for faster results. Applicants are assigned their test centres and devices before the test.
Home-based OET is a computer-based option where applicants complete the test from the comfort of their own homes using their own devices, rather than taking it from a test centre.
